Minimal Marketing - a Quickstart Guide

Do you aspire to make your creative entrepreneur life easier, the business run smoother, and to have more time to create and do what only you can do inside your business?

Read on and learn my top tips to become a stealth minimal marketer!

First of all, know that adopting a ‘less is more’ mentality, getting hyper focused and streamlining your marketing efforts will make literally EVERYTHING in your business simpler, clearer and easily actionable - all conserving your valuable time, talent and energy.

Minimalism in general began as an art movement in the 1960s in America and is now finding more and more appeal with people in the midst of overload, anxiety and overwhelm from the volume of information coming at us daily - including texts, emails, alerts, social media posts, video content etc. Not to mention the multitude of marketing tactics, strategies, funnels, algorithms and more that entrepreneurs face every day. If all of it leaves you paralyzed and stuck without a game plan, at a standstill not taking any action at all, or finds you frustrated and exhausted from trying to be all of the places all of the time - know there’s another way!

Here are my top things to focus on that will simplify your life and your marketing efforts right now. Before diving in, it’s best to make sure on WHO your ideal client is. You need to know them in depth - not just surface demographics - but things like what they do on the weekends, what they would most likely do if they won a million dollars, what their favorite colors are, what they value most in their lives - you get the idea. You need to dig deep and really understand who you most want to serve and who they are. From this knowledge you’ll be ready to apply suggestions here to move your forward.

  1. think CONSISTENCY vs. QUANTITY

I know, I know - all of the people will tell you you’ve got to be posting in all of the places multiple times every single day. And, while this may certainly be true for some of you, the majority of creatives I serve are able to not only build communities of passionate followers, but to foster connection and drive engagement and sales by doing LESS but in a committed, consistent way. This can look like and posting consistently just 4 times a week, or once a day, for example. It’s about posting on a regular schedule on only the social media platforms that make the most sense for your business. These are those where your ideal clients, customers and collectors can be found. This can look like committing to a monthly, bi-weekly or weekly email to your subscribers. This can look like scheduling your social content on only 1 key platform and showing up reliably multiple times a week. The key is the commitment to the regular frequency. People know they can count on you.

  2. always go for QUALITY vs. QUANTITY -

When you do show up focus on providing value, helping someone get a great deal, or feel inspired. Share your key teachings, share work/projects in progress, your inspiration, give exclusive insider peeks inside your creative practice. Focus on content that has a clear CTA (call to action) and can actually make a difference for someone in some way.

  3. THOUGHTFUL CURATION - Think about curating all of your outward focused social media feeds, website, collateral materials, etc. thoughtfully, and in the simplest way possible. I like to focus on my 5 C’s: keep things clear, concise, connected, cohesive & compelling.

The beauty of a minimalist approach to your marketing efforts is that it allows you to really focus on what matters most, what lights you up, and what drives ROI. It’s about having a sequential plan (NOT about trying to do all of the things at once). It’s about capitalizing on the low hanging fruit, discovering the simple, easy ways that are most aligned for you that allow you to do work you love and have a life too. Minimal marketing allows you to make decisions quickly with clarity, develop a system for easy implementation for a given period of time, and makes it easy to track your return on investment.

Ultimately, a ‘less is more’ approach to your marketing allows you to establish and thoughtfully grow a powerful brand identity. Is it the breath of fresh air you need right now in your business? Let me know in the comments below!
